    rob made both those trades.

i don't get this. saric's small salary cost 2 2nds to dump. it was late in FA. wasn't happening.

I don't want to go on with this, but you do not know that they could have easily dumped Dalton. Plus, at the time they let Goodwin walk Dalton was still considered a somewhat valuable future piece.

Goodwin has developed into a solid role player, but at the time I'm pretty sure the team valued Rui significantly higher that Goodwin.

specifically that people are blaming Bronny for not having Godwin (or even signing Smart). Bronny seems like a perfectly reasonable prospect he may or may not work but he look like a better prospect then Knecht lol.

What I'm saying is that teams do moves all the time to make roster spots not just letting go of a prospect, teams move expiring. as @sk2408 noted you can do a consolidation trade, or move Knecht who again is the biggest dead weight on the roster.

Looking at Godwin's play (they had this dude inhouse after all and JJ liked him) it is not quite a Caruso like failure but it's up there. Luka needs physical defenders who can shoot and the Lakers just let him go. Godwin probably needs a first for Phoenix to give up on him now

There is no evidence that Rob even considered this - team get creative. You are still allowed to buy picks in the NBA still for example. his numbers on Phoenix ouch

I'm not blaming Bronny. I would blame Lebron for Bronny being on the roster. Who would you rather have, Bronny or Goodwin?

Again you and sk are looking at things in hindsight and stating "just do a consolidation trade" when none of us knows whether a good one was even available to us at the time. All the reliable sources at the time explained it came down to Goodwin or Smart.

@abeer3 would also say this but what this shows to me is a team that has a boxed in mentality. My counterpoint is I'd rather Bronny and Godwin than Knecht, Gabe, and Maxi. They valued expirings. Hindsight for me is odd - I'm pretty sure I said I liked the Smart signing and hated letting Godwin go. My framework would have been to keep both.

When I agree with Rob I'm pretty upfront about it even when it doesn't work out- I thought the DS trade was a good one, I liked his 3 summer signings, I thought Prince as a reasonable add on (aargh didn't know he would be Gabe 1.0).

Hayes attacking the mascot when he did is just weird.

i'm boxed in by the reality that you can't snap fingers on consolidation trades or salary dumps. a sensible team would have cut bronny (never signed to a guaranteed deal; be serious, man).

which dumps and consolidations happened at this stage of FA, both last year and in the several years prior? how much draft capital did they cost? did we have it?

it was smart or goodwin. they're about even this year, with smart costing more and being hurt more. we lost. you and i were some of the only people on here who even thought that would be possible.

I don’t blame Rob for the Westbrook trade, the actual process was sound, just the outcome didn’t work out. Russ was still an all star in Washington and 11th in MVP voting. The idea isn’t that different to the Luka/Lebron concept now, two heliocentric players that are good play makers for 48 mins and can score and get their teammates involved. Westbrook just didn’t work out.

I’d also argue that the offseason where we got Marc Gasol, Schroeder and Trez was good too.

But at the same time I don’t like his team building as AD and LeBron started ageing out, lots of odd moves and wrong choices like letting Caruso go over THT. Luka isn’t a saving grace, that’s not a repeatable or plannable process. An MVP should never be traded in their prime, our benefit came at a critical error from another GM. You can’t recreate that.

I think choosing not to make moves has its pros and cons - one of being, Luka is getting older, he’ll be 28 in next years playoffs, and we traded for him at 25/26. Time is ticking.

Magic started that trade, after Lebron publicly asked for it. You like to pick and choose what is Rob and then more on someone else.
Nico was moving Luka anyway but yes Rob was the GM

He was spoon feed two great trades, maybe that's all he's good at completing?
