lebron was being compared to MJ and being called the king when he was still in high school. 23 years later and still producing at a high level at age 41, he's somehow exceeded the hype that surrounded him back then

It's an ongoing joke, he almost had 27-7-7 with the lakers and then hit a LeF*** you 3 before being subbed out, finishing with 30-7-7. Super funny

Really cool year long Q&A from McMenamin, asking Bron all kind of stuff throughout the year.

Biggest thing: f*** you Solomon Hill

i know people have said that injury was a turning point, but i guess i never heard lebron say it. weird that it would be an ankle sprain of all things.

i also find the fixation on origin to be interesting. this idea that being from akron and being able to do big things is a little funny to me, as i think greatness is so rare that we probably shouldn't expect it to emanate from any specific source, geographically. like, if you're one of one, you're almost bound to be from a random place? we can't all be from manhattan or beverly hills or whatever.

I think it's more about the access to opportunities and confidence. In random places the people around don't dream that big and it takes a lot to reach to this stage.i believe many are lost in the path because of their surroundings

i mean, michael jordan (born in nyc but grew up in wilmington), larry bird, and magic johnson were all from comparable/smaller towns. it's just interesting that lebron likes this narrative for himself. and i also feel like even if you were born in manhattan, if al pacino showed up and had dinner with you, you'd be in equal disbelief at your status relative to your origins.

I don’t find it strange at all. It’s the story he tells himself, young, poor kid with no siblings, no father from a small town makes it to the absolute pinnacle of his profession and becomes the 1% of the 1% of the 1%. It’s such a rare feat that it’s not meant to happen and the fact it happened to him would be humbling.

(Let’s leave out the all time genetics in the story though hehe)

I went to college in NE Ohio and worked around SVSM in Akron - I can tell you for a fact that place definitely has the feel of being left behind. Clevelanders got sick of the river burning etc jokes but you can feel it even more in places like Akron. Places where a century ago where people came to Akron voluntarily as a "destination" with Akron being the rubber capital of the world. It's not like people are unhappy there or you can't have a good life but the vibe and energy are not that of a place where the world revolves around what's happening in that area. Weird mix of urban decay and rural fly over country.

Working in the hospital and labor and delivery in those hospitals that served Lebron's neighborhood - it really does feel amazing he made it. Anyways, now I want to watch Hoop Dreams again lol

ok. as something of an expert on things like the stories we tell ourselves, i do find it strange. when you're the 1% of the 1% of the 1%, you could literally choose almost any biographical detail upon which to center your story. in fact, you named both "only child" and "child of single mother" as other candidates (instead of "just a kid from akron", you could easily brand yourself as "just gloria's only son"). choosing the town, to me, even over those two things, is interesting. is it supposed to be a stand-in for poverty (as pioneer is maybe suggesting)? this would fit with some of his other interests (e.g., systemic oppression).

whatever, it just struck me as i was reading that the specificity of that narrative thread is unique and most definitely a choice.

The old man lead us into an upset over Houston, incredible performance, especially taking into account that he's 41.

Leading a team to a playoff series win at 41, just incredible stuff. Yeah it was rough, but I’d expect it to be, but he still got it done. One of the greatest to ever do it, it’s been a fun ride if nothing else having him here for 8 seasons.

Can't do the 40 point games but can have a 25+ with a lot of rebounds and assists while being the best player on the floor against the Rockets (even if KD played, Bron was better)

    Impressive for the ledger.
