this is why i asked the question earlier, actually. DFS's bird rights could be useful to both him and us.
no. i was interested last year in swapping gabe for him, and it's good that the lakers' FO isn't me, because he's just regressed and regressed. but whitmore is certainly a guy worth a look. which would also make me feel less bad about moving knecht for a center. which with utah bringing in nurkic...
Yes but what are you trading for Jokic? Reaves + any good young guy (if Adou starts to develop) + Rui if he is here + all your firsts. So you'll have Luka and Jokic earning 110-120 million and then not much to build around them with. I like the pairing but this new CBA is tough. I believe you can't have any supermax contracts, let alone 2.
I'll be disappointed if we trade DFS for Whitemore and Landale. One is Hayes level or worse and the other doesn't pass or defend. Players like DFS aren't flashy, but they're critical to winning basketball games in the playoffs. Just give him 3 years x MLE money. Bobby Portis is a good example of a resign 3 years x 44m.
I don't like Whitmore unless we're comparing him to JHS. But if DFS is gone anyway then a DK, Whitmore, and 1st package is a more attractive carrot to dangle than we currently have out there for trade bait. And 100% agree about being a winning player and the significance of that.
well, he didn't help us win any games in these playoffs. and he's not getting younger. but yes, i am still on the record that i would go 3/40 for him (or 3/44 if portis set the market). i guess i can just hold both thoughts in my mind: DFS is a good guy to have and there are reasons to be very concerned about paying DFS into the future. again, i was posting about this before we traded for him. he's getting by a bit on previous work, imo. and yeah, he changed some culture here, but that was probably also just excising dlo, whom one of our stars obviously and actively hated, lol. anyway, i'll reserve comment until all dust settles. he hasn't even left yet, and we haven't seen what all we're going to do. obviously, if our offseason is...letting DFS walk...it's an F-. edit: also, i'm not a huge whitmore fan at all. i just like the idea that if we're going to lose DFS, get something, anything, back. whitmore is worth at least two of the seconds we sent out for DFS, right?
Losing DFS for nothing is a very bad look, especially to Houston who will utilize his D. Rob is on the clock. If he doesn’t perform some magic I anticipate Walter will kick him to the curb though which is a saving grace.
We could split the full MLE between Capela and Bruce Brown. Then try to flip our 3 expiring contracts..Rui,Gabe and Rui for another move. Like Kessler and Collins? Kessler, Collins, Capela and Brown? That's a nice haul
It would really suck to lose DFS in free agency after he came in and changed our defense, changed the identity of the team, AND after we traded 3 second round picks to get him. That would at the very least yet again be poor asset management by the FO, and a part of a really bad continuing pattern. Ayton potentially falling into our laps doesn’t make that not true.
I agree with the thought that Ayton has somewhere lined up already or he wouldn’t accept a buyout. Gotta feel like we are high on the list given our clear need and him sharing an agent with Luka.
People talking like 3 second rounds were a steep price. If he goes, he goes. We open the full MLE and can do more things. A reminder that you can use the MLE in trades too But I think the main topic is that we may be moving Bron and that will change everything
yeah, i don't get it, really. it's a low sunk cost. what's interesting to me is that we've learned that houston is indeed offering 4 years, but at less than the full MLE. how much less? i think our commitments minus DFS and plus the 3 empty roster charges is about 180 as things stand. 2nd apron is 196. it's possible to use part of the MLE to get ayton more than tpmle AND sign DFS to a 4/40. though it does really seem like he's just walking.
Was watching Lane when he went live last night. He started off this info by saying he wasn't reporting anything and a lot can change from midnight Sunday and the start of FA, but he said from what he's hearing it really really seems unlikely that DFS will be back.
yeah, we'll find out by day's end at least what the offers are/have been, right? it's obvious DFS has been negotiating with other teams for a bit, particularly given that we've had weeks to hammer out a deal and didn't get there. curious to see if some of this was just foresight with the ayton thing, and this is part of what has lebron annoyed. not only did we not give him the 1+1, using the full MLE means hardcapped at the first apron. the only thing i'm not understanding (hence my post above) is the continued insistence that "we'd like to retain" him. it would be easy to just concede at this point if we truly had gone in another direction.
Yeah, either they're waiting to see what that final buyout agreement amount was or it's lip service posturing so we can say we wanted to keep him but
And just to be clear, a S&T with Houston eliminates our ability to use the full MLE on Ayton without first dumping Gabe and Kleber for minimal salary in return, right?
