Yeah, this never gets better with time, only worse. How you could have a player like this ok your team who starts for you in the clinching game of the Finals, who is willing to take less to stay, and you pass, is beyond me.
Lakers won a title 5 seasons ago with defense and rebounding and threw all of it away because they overreacted to a playoffs series loss in which their 2 best players were injured . They never recovered from it .

maybe it's semantics, but i didn't view that as a "fringes" move. i'm frequently waving my hands at the margins/fringes talk because i truly believe what's happening there is of minimal impact. like, roster spots 12-15 are just not very important to me. there's such a low hit rate there that whining about it just seems like an outlet for a deep desire to whine. it's why drafting bronny didn't bother me at all, for example. but this wasn't that. this was a key rotation player from a title team who did exactly the stuff we needed and was already a proven commodity in our system. and he walked for under the mle when we had bird rights. holy s*** i still can't believe i'm typing this years later.
Yes but actual cost to sign him with the repeater tax was like 30M. That’s not “marginal”. The real screw up was picking THT to keep over him.
serious contenders don't make those choices. they keep both and worry about finances when they're in a down cycle. we saved money and put ourselves into a down cycle.
