Now that we've had a chance to try it, I think the shoutbox is awesome during games. I initially thought having an actual thread would be good to have also, but today it just seemed redundant. I just found myself typing things in the live chat and ignoring the thread, but that might have just been me. Maybe instead, would there be a way to archive the contents of the shoutbox after the game is over as its own thread?

The content of the chat gets archived automatically every day, but it's not in a separate thread per day. It always goes to the same thread so it's not exactly in a format that would be great for reading through. Right now it's only view able for the staff just in case we need to review it.

We talked about it, and we're going to see about having a thread as well as the chat for another game or two just to see if the thread catches on, but I do agree, it does seem like the chat is really popular.

The Shout Box was lively last night...... for a new site during a preseason game. Imagine when we have a couple hundred people posting during a big game. The real time posting will be most felt then. No more clicking SUBMIT over and over because others are talking about the same play.

Yeah, I was loving it last night - and that was with 40-something people for a preseason game.

I do like to be able to review the script, and I can see why others would like to see that, too.

Is there any way we can get an "@" feature with a notification in Shoutbox? With a bunch of streaming chat going on, if people are trying to have a back n' forth it could get lost. Something like....

Doc Brown: @trodgers what do you think of Kobe tonight?

trodgers gets a notification that someone made a direct statement to him and he can reply. Kind of like Twitter.

I don't know if that's possible, already in the system, or what, just spit ballin' some ideas.

We're checking on that - it's a really good idea, and I think several of us are noticing how useful it would be.

    Thanks, Doc.

The only thing at this time that I am sort of bummed out about the shoutout box chat is that you can't look back at old posts. It only goes back so far which isn't much. Why do I care about this???

Well because if I happen to not be able to watch the game Live I always record it so I can watch it after work. When I watch the recording I would often follow the action in the Gameday thread to see what other fan, our family here at Lakersball.com was saying. Well, last night I went to the Shoutout box and saw that I couldn't do this anyone. I know Barns said eailer in this thread that the history of the Shoutbox does get sent to the admins/mods.

I was just a little bummed that I couldn't get to see all the dialogue everyone had when watching the game from start to finish like I could with the CL Gameday Threads. Even if we do eventually have a thread as well as the Shoutbox is looks like most people use the Shoutbox so I wouldn't really even use the thread.

Just my 2 cents. This Thursdays game against GSW I will be able to watch the game Live and will definitely try this shoutout box for myself.

good point and this addressed another one of my concerns with the Shoutbox. if some of us are trying to have a brief conversations and looks like most of it will get pasted up or lost especially if so many people are saying things at once. It doesn't have a long history of being able to scroll down and see.

Edit....trodgers is already on it and keeping notes on this. thx

    Mine!!!

Now, I am concerned that when there are 200 people the chatbox will be impossible to follow, due to constant stream of responses. Another commonly implemented feature is text color per-user. This however is currently per-message, so...

Piggybacking on Doc's idea, maybe the @ system could be a "whisper" to that user that only the addresser/addressee can see (colored in a different font). That way the more intimate conversations between just two users doesn't add to cluttering the overall chat. That's getting pretty advanced, but if it's feasible it could be helpful.

Ok, so I changed the time stamp in the Shout Box to give more information, and I redirected the archiving of the messages to a publicly viewable thread in the Games Day area of the forum: http://lakersball.com/forums/games-day.25/

The software automatically creates a new archive post at 12 midnight eastern. I'll check to see if I can change the time so we're more likely to have a full game saved with each archiving, but unfortunately, there's doesn't seem to be a way to mark each archive post as being from a specific game.

Asked the creator of the tag system we use here if it's possible to add the tag system to the chat box. Awaiting a reply.

Changed the name "Shoutbox" on the tabs on the top of the board to "Game Time"

I can't seem to be able to read the Game Time Archive in the Gameday section.

when I click on that thread it open opens but then on the bottom it shows that it is locked and reads "(You have insufficient privileges to reply here.)"

You don't have to get to it now, just wondering if anyone else can't get access as well?

It will start archiving chats from now on so there's nothing to archive right now.

People also shouldn't be able to reply because we don't want people cluttering an archive with random posts. :)

I basicaly got a reply saying "ask the creator of the chat program", but that addon isn't supported, so that's a no go. If we end up being able to do this, we will have to alter the code ourselves.

Can you tell me what the license is? I might be able to give it a look, especially if it's OSS.
