    Maybe Durant really wants to be a Laker?!?!! other than that delusional wistful thinking, our offseason free agency will probably same old same old...waste time on Durant and Horford, lose out on guys like DD, HB and the others.

    Can't criticize the FO then think like "him" ...

    Got to add talent , and as a horrible team we can't be picky .

    If we go the " players on one year deals" route again , I'm going to lose it .

    The realistic plan should be to make the playoffs by end of 17-18 then real contend for a title 2-3 seasons later .

    Of course if a KD really wants to be a Laker , I'll take it but I stop dreaming a long time ago

    I'm doing some thinking. Suppose we can swing these two big FA additions: DD and Whiteside.

    Russell
    Clarkson
    DeRozan
    Randle
    Whiteside

    We have a strong second unit already:
    ?
    Williams
    Young
    Nance
    Black

    I'd like to see us look at a Vet PG who can shoot threes, and two are likely going to be available at a price significantly below league average salary: Beno Udrih and Aaron Brooks. Brooks is the more consistent three-point shooter of the two.

    DeRozan/Young
    Randle/Nance
    Whiteside/Black

    Add in your favorite third stringers. I'll go with Brown and Upshaw. I'd let Kelly walk. He'll probably get more $ than he's worth to us. Draft best available.

    A name I'd really really like to see us visit is Greivis Vasquez. Demar Derozan (according to Pincus's estimated max) would cost us 25.3 million. Hassan Whiteside would cost us 21 million.

    That totals about 26.7 million + 46.3 million= 73 million. Cap holds would increase that by about 1.5 - 2 million or so, let's call it 2 just for fun. We're looking at 75 million unless I'm mistaken. Heck we can push that up to about 77.6 million if Brandon Bass for whatever reason doesn't opt out.

    Vasquez is a fantastic backup PG. A premiere backup PG even. You could chase him for about 10 million and even still have a bit left over. I think that bit would go to the new contracts for Clarkson and Black though. Still we'd have some true, true depth.

    The next step would be filling in minimum guys. There's plenty around that we could target. I'd definitely let Kelly go get his money elsewhere at this point he's a bad fit. There's plenty of minimum level guys we could give a call to. You can also look to move Young/Bass for some athletic big man or some such thing.

    i think derozan is FAR from a given, even if the lakers offer max. toronto's good right now.

    i also would be surprised if riley lets whiteside get away. he's a tricky old bastard.

    but let's be optimistic and say derozan signs. i'm ok with splitting whiteside's max on two competent centers (one or both could come via trade). and example would be koufos and noah. if the mavs go chasing big fish, you could replace one of those with pachulia. i don't think you need a flashy center to win, just someone who can set screens, rebound, and not get dominated in the post. ideally, the lakers would find a better roll man, but short of whiteside, there's not a lot out there, i don't think.

    I don't know the stats, but a name I saw the other day was Ian Mahinmi. I don't know if anyone has checked his PnR stats. I can look into them later today. I love the Pachulia idea, but he's been pretty happy in Dallas too.

    I definitely don't think Derozan is a given, but I think he's someone we could absolutely sway with:
    - pickup after Kobe's legacy
    - be the leader of our young group of guys
    - help build a long-term contender in your own home town
    - here's a lot of money
    - here's more money opportunities elsewhere
    - legacy
    - etc.

    Of the top PF/C that are available next year, Al Horford is 7th on the list as one of the better pick and roll finishers in the league. Pau is there too, but I think that shipped has sailed and we need to go younger. Whiteside is the next, who can provide a defensive presence as well. Zaza is also there on the list, and I love the physicality he plays with. Ian Mahinmi is pretty decent in the pick and roll too.

    I'd rank them:

    1, Whiteside
    2. Horford
    3. Zaza

    Unless KD comes over here and makes us an instant contender, I'm not confident guys like Horford or Zaza are willing to come to a team on the rebuild at their point of their careers. I think we can turn Whiteside into another Deandre, with Bosh squatting in Miami, I don't think he'll get the expanded offensive role he wants.

    Theoretically, that looks good on paper. I see problems with the spacing within that starting group, though. I'm of the opinion that if DD is signed Lou or JC or packaged to address other needs the team may have too balance out the roster with more finishers, shooter, defenders, etc. Considering that Lou is only making $7 million for the next few seasons, and JC has a chance to be signed to a higher annual salary this offseason has an RFA, he may be the odd man out, IMO.

    I think some of those are legit considerations. More finishers?

    Russell shoots 62% within 3' of the rim, and while he doesn't dunk, he's a good finisher for a PG.
    Clarkson shoots 59% career within 3' of the rim, and he dunked 20 times last season. He's not a dunker, but he's not a bad finisher.
    DeRozan shoots 64% career within 3' of the basket, and he has dunked 121 times in the past three seasons.
    Randle is probably the main culprit as a shooter - converting only 52% of his shots within 3' of the rim in his career, but he has dunked 31 times this year in a half season.
    Whiteside shoots 76% within 3', and he has dunked 86 times last season, and is on pace for 150 dunks this season.
    --These numbers are on par with GS's numbers, btw. We'd have finishers. We'd need other things though...

    I agree that outside shooting needs a bump, which is why I'm leaning toward Books, Lou, Young as our second line's wings. That would address both the notion of finishing and spacing. I think you can always have more defense though, and that would clearly be this team's biggest need.

    Gotcha. Within the hypothetical starting unit you laid out those are very good finishers according to your stats. What about the the roster? Of course my larger point is balancing out this roster note than anything else from top to bottom. That will take more than one offseason, though. I'll just take the talent now and worry about fit later on down the line.

    Agreed. I'm thinking about returning this team to respectability and enticing a legit coach and superstar to land here. It won't happen in one offseason, but these would be good steps.

    Imagine if KD signs a one year and then joins that team. Boom. Dynasty.
