What are Lakers paying old coaches? And new options to replace Byron?

    It's funny because their coach now is running basically the exact same offense and defense, but yeah Brooks is no genius with Xs and Os.

    People are right that he may be a good development coach though, what Byron was supposed to be.

    I think the one way they save face is to fire EVERYBODY. Jeanie just sits at the top and fires Mitch, Jim, Byron and his staff...everyone but Ryan West. That way whichever coach that comes in knows its a completely new regime. The people that kept hiring and firing these guys are gone. Just clear out everyone except a couple of the assistants to coach out the rest of the season unless you think Thibodeau is the answer since he is currently unemployed. I don't think Thibs is a good fit and I don't want our players to be ran into the ground.

    Heck, maybe that's what's happening and we are simply waiting until Steve Kerr gets back so we can ask the Warriors for permission to talk to Walton (which most teams are OK with as long as you are trying to promote an assistant to a HC spot).

    I need someone smarter than I to convince me Luke Walton really is this good. He's taking his marching orders from Kerr, and he's got basketball-Neo as his point guard. I mean, yeah, this 22-0 thing is RIDICULOUS and he seems to have the temperament, poise and intelligence necessary for the gig, but are we sure this isn't fools gold? How much of the streak do you guys actually attribute to Walton?

    PS, I would rather pick someone from the phone book that have Byron Scott so no complaints here if we do end up hiring the guy.

    Anyone has to be better than Byron Scott. That is the only argument that needs to be made right now. Think about it...he's making some people miss Mike Brown and Mike D'antoni. EVEN ME.

    The NBA has changed and I'd call this the "modern-era NBA" where the old school ways of "manning up and showing grit" is not enough anymore. Analytics rule, social media has a huge hand in marketing the NBA, and with that players egos are a lot bigger. You need a coach that can relate with teams that are getting younger and younger with each generation. You need one that's not a retread that will understand the "modern NBA" and grow up along with the kids on the roster. Look at the teams lately that has had success or are showing improvements with their young teams. They're pretty much new coaches: Brad Stevens, Mike Malone, Steve Clifford, Budenholzer... they were all assistants... they learned from the best but they're relating to their young roster and are showing growth.

    Luke may be coaching the best team in basketball right now but you need both player and coaching talent to mesh it all together. Even with Kerr's input, Luke still has to do it on the court. And he's done it very well, putting the best team in basketball in position to win. I think none was more evident of that work when they made that HUGE comeback against the Clippers this season.

    If we do hire Luke (and it's still a big IF considering who Mitch answers to still), I'm not even expecting playoffs or wins right away. I'm expecting him to grow up with the team and mold the kids like how Phil molded Kobe and his other teammates into champions and understanding their roles on the team.

    That's what Byron is missing with this team. He's too incompetent and stubborn to relate with the players and he doesn't give them defined roles with his asinine lineups.

    I will never go as far as to say that I miss either of the Mikes (Brown or Antoni no D), but I do finally feel that Byron is worse than either one of them. And I hated both of them. But Byron has sunk to the lowest depths in my opinion. He's the worst Lakers coach of all time. Wow, how low we have sunk.

    I called Luke to our team last year, but I thought it'd be another season before we could hire him. Guess I was wrong. Either way, I read all the material you posted plus a Ken Berger article...needless to say, I want him even more now. He's everything Byron Scott isn't from everything I am reading: leader, good communicator, good with X's and O's, players speak highly of him, and he's been mentored by Phil Jackson. Give me Luke, Mitch. Do it.

    Brooks isn't a good coach nor a development one ( keep playing Fisher over Lamb) .

    He's a great " get out of the way of stars " coach but that's it .

    -Bad rotations
    - No adjustments ( keep playing Porkins in the Finals , refused to double the post in 13 against the Grizz being the most notable ones)

    When Kerr comes back, ROFY, how's your relationship with your "son" since you kind of disowned him to adopt Randle? Hope you have sway with him still if / when the Lakers ask for permission to speak with him at the end of this season if not sooner when Byron is fired.

    Whenever they're in town, whenever they feel like it, they have an open door policy for their BBall competition Jonz.

    How about Kobe putting together a Magic Dodger type basketball consortium..... otherwise ..... to buy the damn team? Start with the uber rich pharmaceutical guy that's a (minority owner?)

    Who has any guesses you don't mind pulling from there ....... as to what Kobe was thinking the other day when he said he was (open) to staying with the team in some capacity?

    I was doing some reading this weekend on Scott Brooks, and I was getting familiar with him. Anyway, one thing that always stuck out was his ability to create, build, and foster his relationship with his players. He's a got an excellent reputation as a developmental coach. One thing I liked was taken from a Q&A with Jared Zwerling:

    BR: Players don't question their relationship with you, which seems unique. Someone with the team told me you're the "personal touch" the team has needed through the years, especially for Kevin and Russell. How do you keep the guys motivated?

    SB: I tell the players all the time, "I don't have the answers, you don't have the answers, but let's figure them out together." A lot of times they have great suggestions, and sometimes they don't, and you've got to let them know. I've always felt that the way you establish a relationship with your team is to always have a connection with the guys. I sometimes do free-throw competitions with them, but I'm still learning what really motivates the guys.

    People always say, "Are you a players' coach or not?" I say, "I'm a fair coach." If you give great effort to the team, I will do everything in my power to make it work. Luckily for me, Kevin, Russell and our leaders are great examples for all of our players. So very rarely do I have to coach the effort and get on guys.

    The interview talk also touches on his X's and O's. Little did I know, before he got terminated with OKC, he was going to start building a motion offense. The more I read about him, the more I like him. No, he's not perfect, but he does do something's particularly well. Develop players, great with media, attention to detail, and build and foster relationshiops with players.

    I doubt he's the long term solution, but Brooks would be fantastic for recognizing our players strengths and allowing them to play to them. On a 3 year contract, I'd be all for it if he can also get an assistant that specializes in defense.

    He does need good assistants. Well, he may not be the long-term solution, let us not forget that he does have very good relationships with Durant & Westbrook. Given our difficulties to attract top flight talent in free agency, we could use his influence for free agents in general but those two guys in particularly.
