i just don't think we need another top shelf star. brunson wasn't that in dallas (at all), and kyrie really wasn't much better than reaves last year, imo. better, but not by a ton.

as for whether he's won--he had one year with a team built nicely to his strengths (the team he dragged to the wcf wasn't), and they lost to a historically good boston team, with luka playing on one leg.

we need to look at denver. they have no other other perennial allstars, but jokic is good enough that they can spread it around and play. hell, they overpaid porter by a factor of 2 and still fielded a really good team. it took some time, but they did it. we can, too. don't need another top-15 player because luka is basically as good as jokic. yes. i'm saying it again.

jokic only has one ring despite years of video game production, and them's just the breaks. let's try to get our version his ring.

i think that one's an overpay, though i like the general archetype.

the mavs' two best finds around luka were udfa/trash heap types in DFS and DJJ*. those guys are just out there, not able to fit alongside talents that aren't luka. exploit that! starting this summer. let's go.

*i'm oversimplifying--lively, gafford, pj, brunson, kyrie, etc. were all nice pickups, but they were mostly had in very conventional ways, open to most teams, imo. the gold is in finding value in guys that don't have it elsewhere. all those guys can play anywhere. the luxury a superduperstar affords you is you can take unconventional routes on the fringes.

the durant trade saga is pretty interesting, as the rumored prices are all over the map. for instance, i saw this today:

like, wouldn't phx just take that and run? you guys finished 11th with durant there and healthy. he's 37 years old. meanwhile, they've sent windhorst out there to tell people the offers are so bad they might just not trade him. on the other hand, some of their local papers are laying out the reasons for why a) they really need to trade him and b) the return might be underwhelming.

when he finally moves, the return will probably surprise me in either direction.

edit: a suns guy (gambodoro) says minny's offer is:

    - Rudy Gobert
    - Donte Divenchenzo
    - Rob Dillingham and/or Terrance Shannon Jr
    - 17th pick

again...don't you take this? if your goal is to be competitive, you get two starting caliber players (one who's proven able to anchor a top regular season defense time and again), two nice prospects, and a pick.

Durant has had such a strange career. One of the 20 best guys ever but it's been one misstep after another since he left OKC. It really is a bizarro version of LeBron's career. Leaves the small market franchise after one Finals appearance but a couple of disappointing playoff exits, creates the super team in the glamour market, goes back to a small market/inept franchise to try and win their first title, then goes to a more glamorous market again to play with a young star.

The contrast between LeBron getting a farewell tour on a Luka-lead Lakers team while Durant maybe gets the 6 seed in the East with Scottie Barnes and Gradey d*** is...something.

I think those are overpays. The Toronto One even more. 3 of their 4 best players for a 37 yo guy? I don't know how, but they gotta keep Barnes + 1 of Quickley/Barrett if they trade for Giannis or Durant if they want to have a shot, especially Quickley. He looked really good in Toronto with proper minutes and usage

All I will ever truly remember about Durant is him commenting about not wanting to play with Lebron because everything around him is a circus, but then his whole career turned into the worst circus we have ever seen. On top of that, his negative takes have been cringe worthy. I would NOT want to see him on the Lakers under any circumstances.

Do not want!! Sure, he's an all time great but he's 37 and always has injury issues. Our needs are pretty obvious - starting level center, starting level three and D wing, maybe an upgrade at backup PG/and or a backup Center. Durant fills none of those needs.

If Gobert is in that deal...I wonder if we'd have a shot at getting him re-routed here for expirings and the pick? Depends what Phoenix wants out of this. He's turning 33 which obviously isn't ideal, but would be a heck of a piece to add for the next couple of years.

According to NBA columnist Andy Larsen, Jazz and Sixers discussed the trade as a result of which forward Paul George can go to Utah ..

As part of a possible transaction, Philadelphia will trade the 3rd pick of the upcoming draft for the 5th

George's contract left three seasons with an annual salary of 51.7 million, 54.1 million and 56.6 million.

    Wow

Both Boston and LAL being sold in the same offseason - I hope Silver knows what he's doing with these new ownership groups. It's not all about the bottom line for the selling owners here - the league needs these two teams to have good owners as they are such an integral part of the NBA
