That's a great question actually. Personally, I haven't noticed anything different. The talking heads that didn't like him with the Mavs still don't like him. He still gets the same treatment from the refs that he got in Dallas also.

One thing with Luka is that he LOVES pressure and putting on a show. LA is the perfect spot for him. Not many can handle the bright lights. Luka loves them.

 

Yessir! That was me. Been posting on Mavs boards since about 2008 or so. I'm all Lakers now. What they did to Luka and the fan base was ridiculous. Dirk has only been to two NBA games since the trade. Luka's first game with LA and last night. That speaks volumes.

 

The game vs Mavs summed up why AD had to be moved.

The reality is, Mavs fans felt robbed by the deal. It's not to say AD isn't a fantastic player. He was playing like a top 10-15 player before being traded.

But in arguably the biggest game of the year for AD, he didn't do anything to qualm the uneasiness Mavs fans felt. No 35/15 game. No emotion. As much as it was a Luka return game, it was AD's first game against a team that traded him. Where was the desire for him to come out, dominate, and put the league on notice that he's going to try and carry the Mavs to a title?

It was a 4 day break for them and he played over 30 minutes. 13/11/6 is not what Mavs fans signed up for. And he was being guarded by LeBron most of the time. 40 year old LeBron should not be able to stop a 32 year old top frontcourt player in the league. AD almost seems like an afterthought in the trade which shouldn't be the case. I get Dallas isn't a good team right now but man, you could have shown a bit more assertiveness in these type of games.

Luka seemed like a perfect fit for the Lakers for a long time, it just didn't seem very realistic. Can't wait to see him in the playoffs!

 

AD really missed a chance to have fans embrace him a little more. When I say missed, I mean by miles. Might as well have sat out. I get we doubled him, but his impact was negligible.

It's his personality, not everyone is a killer. There are guys who go beyond the normal in specific situations and feed off of pride to absolutely dominate. Luka, Kobe, MJ are like that. AD is not. And he does dominate when it comes to him, but he doesn't force it.
Even Bron is a little bit like that, although he already shown multiple times he can switch it on in key moments.

AD is a great player but he won't put a team on his shoulders and win at will. Just not his style

When Luka Doncic, LeBron James and Austin Reaves share the court, the Lakers score a scorching 119.5 points per 100 possessions, which ranks in the 83rd percentile of all lineups leaguewide, per Cleaning the Glass. But that trio allows an even higher 121.8 points per 100 possessions, which ranks in the 8th percentile.

Despite a midseason surge and better defensive effort, the new-look Lakers are unlikely to actually slow down the best opposing offenses in the playoffs. But if Doncic, James and Reaves can all click together, particularly as they gain more experience playing off each other, they'll make up all those points and more on the other end.

Yep. You guys nailed it. Luka is a dog. Just like Kobe, MJ, Bird, etc. They don't just want to win. They want to make sure you are scared of them. They talked trash and loved when someone tried to step up against them.

Luka is that guy. AD is not. Great player. Kyrie is no different. He has moments when he can turn it on and make some crazy shots. But, he is more like AD. When things got tight in the Finals last year Kyrie shrank. Dallas should have traded Kyrie instead of Luka. But, here we are. Luka isn't going back and neither am I.

wrong thread, but i've seen people saying the mavs game was evidence AD can't be a star or whatever, but you can't play that defensive scheme if the mavs have a frightening perimeter player. with kyrie out, they don't. so you press that advantage like teams did against us.

the fact that we devoted two defenders to AD every possession is kind of the evidence you need to know that he's a 1A offensive option, despite not being a great shooter. he's so fearsome in isolation inside the arc that you'll sell out other stuff to prevent it. dallas doesn't have the personnel right now to capitalize on it, so he was quiet and we won.

and as pioneer said, we worked similarly against jokic, and they DID have murray (and jokic is a better passer than AD).

some of this is simply the fact that it's harder to build offense around guys who aren't threats to just pull up from three in isolation. that's the modern game, better or worse.

AD is very hakeem-like (VERY similar, imo). not sure olajuwon is the same right now. whereas i wonder if john stockton wouldn't be the headliner in the stockton/malone utah years. actually, i don't. he absolutely would be.

 

I get where you are going but AD ain't Hakeem my man. Hakeem had a Van Exel llike handle in the half court and he was more like Embiid with the jumper. Hakeem just a flat out better scorer then AD (AD I submit could have been his own unique big as when that mid range jumper was going as a face up player AD had a bit of TMac/Durant mixed with Hakeem on defense. But that inconsistent jumper just made him miss that upper echolon of offense of the best all time)

Actually what AD reminds me of offense when they had theyre best was Amare before his knee injuries. Just nothing you could do with him facing up as with that first step length and explosion. He had a terrific mid range jumper too so you sagged off it was an easy 2 points. You saw it last night clanked two mid range jumpers that the Lakers were letting him have.
