'The Lakers, a source said, will have interest in Ezeli, seeing his size and rim-protecting defense as an ideal complement to forward Julius Randle. L.A., of course, just hired Warriors assistant Luke Walton to be its coach. Ezeli had the best months of his career in November and December, with Walton filling in while Kerr recovered from back surgery, and before Ezeli’s knee injury.' www.sportingnews.com/nba/news/nba-free-agency-festus-ezeli-golden-state-warriors-luke-walton-contract-lakers/1trjwjn6jd1gj12ikx50928nwl
Because he was on a bad team with poor coaching. He still managed to pull off an impressive stat line of 19.2 pts, 11.8 reb, 4.8 ast. He seemed to be on cruise control the latter half of the season though, and that has led to a lot of criticism of lacking aggression etc. I prefer Ingram btw... I just think Simmons is the preferred choice of the Lakers and has a much higher floor.
I don't think his knee is something that will stick with him moving forward. I like the pursuit, but unfortunately big men always get overpaid.
All I know is, if we got the pick and took Simmons, he better learn to shoot. He and randle can't co-exist as is, they're pretty much the same always go to the hoop type of player. That's why personally I think if we want to roll with Russ, Randle and JC as our core, Ingram is a better fit. He's a shooter, and he doesn't need the ball in his hands. We need more players that can play off ball, Simmons needs the ball from what I have seen.
I just came to post what you posted. The Lakers could end up stealing half of GS's roster if we sign both Ezeli and Barnes to big contracts. We could conceivably max out both of them and force GS to match one or both of them. I'm on board with Ezeli. I like his toughness, defensive ability, and he plays much bigger than he actually is. His injuries are slightly concerning, but I still take the shot. In the link Ross Pickering says he's heard 3/50 million for Ezeli. If that's all it takes to get him, then I'm all in. I'd offer 3/65 million.
For all the cap space & salary experts. If we sign Ezeli at 3/50 mil how much does that leave for us in terms of signing max contracts?
Ezeli SCREAMS system player, and while we will be running the same system, we don't have the two best 3 point shooters in the league and probably the most versatile Swiss army knife either. I'd MUCH rather go get a Noah/Biyombo combo for about the same price...maybe a little more.
We have our own version of Ezeli rotting at the end of our bench. If some proper development took place Tarik Black is our Festus Ezeli. Really dropped the ball on that one Byron.
I like Black, but the one thing he doesn't have is Festuz's size and length. He's undersized. Neither has a jump shot so spacing can be an issue if played alongside Randle. Whiteside is obviously the first choice, but after that it's Horford and the rest are just kind of meh. I'd love to get Festuz, but his knees worry me. Noah hasn't been able to stay healthy the last few years. I see Biyumbo as a 20-24 minute player not a full time starter. Not a whole lot of great options.
I don't know about "much" rather. Biyombo and Ezeli are pretty similar as it is. I'd love to nab someone from GS though to a) help Luke's transition, b) acquire good talent, and c) weaken our division. Golden State is going to be cash strapped here and we could stand to benefit from that.
With all the talk around I will be happy with a summer of Whiteside, Barnes, PIck and pieces in the bench. Low expectations but building a foundation.
Please no to 3/50 million for Festus Ezeli. He'll be 27 years old so it's not like he's some young player with untapped potential. As far as I'm concerned, he has hit his ceiling or is close to it. He has missed 72 games in the past two seasons (36 games per season) and only started in 20 games during that same time span. Also, like @Savory Griddles said, he's essentially a system player. He plays a role, and really, he's only done that well for half a season. Why give someone like that $50 million? This reminds me of the Tristan Thompson contract (which we all thought was stupid)...except he was younger and healthier. He addressed a need, and the Cavs were/are in a position to win. Edit: Not to say I don't want Ezeli. I just don't want him at that price.
Festuz is a terrific player and the only reason I wouldn't be okay with it is the knee issues. This system player thing I don't buy. You defend at the level at he does, you rebound, you block shots, ability to finish inside you can fit any system. I wouldn't mind signing him, but not at max money.
Whoa....50 million for Ezeli? This new CBA must be screwing with me because I honestly think he's a MLE type player.
That's more surprising than Barnes at 21 million? I mean honestly it's all insane. We're just going to have try to make sense out of chaos this summer.
haha when did 27 years old mean a player isn't young. NBA guys have always said the prime for NBA players has been 29-32. I'm not arguing that we go after Ezeli, but he's far from fading because of his age.
Yeah, people are going to need to have an open mind because when FA comes and players start to sign whether with us or someone else the numbers are going to be staggering. I can already feel the frustration coming from some posters on here by what we're going to have to pay some players.
Absolutely and we're a freaking 17 win team. If we have to overpay to get some talent on this roster then so be it. I know 21 million dollars is a lot for Harrison Barnes, but if we strike out on Durant and DeRozan he's the third best guy at that spot.
