What Matisse Thybulle Brings To The Lakers

 

Pelinka is the evil genius.

 

There is context and you shouldn't just make assumptions. There's a difference between starting and the amount of time you play - none of us are stupid. I think he is an ideal starter and should only play 18-24 mins.

The context is this: Luka comes out guns blazing to start the game and plays the whole first quarter - averaging 12 points that first quarter. Matisse is kind of an ideal guy to surround him with (and Grimes too), both of them should go all out for the first 6-8 mins trying to lock down the perimeter while Kessler protects the rim. I don't see why we can't run out to a strong first quarter lead with that tactic.

We're talking about a guy who is a ball hawk and defensive playmaker, Grimes and Tisse should be able to get a handful of turnovers in that first quarter.

That's fair. I like the signing for the money, though. If he can perform better than a $3 million dollar player, that's all I want. I also don't think he's played more than 65 games more than once?

He's a good depth piece. Probably can fill in as a starter for a game here and there if there's an injury, etc.

I liked that he works better in chaos, which I think is what JJ is going after. Heard yesterday in a pod, maybe was Pete Zayas where basically because we don't have good POA last year, we went the other route where we try to get deflections and scrambling plays.
We do that by staying with our guy until he gets shoulder-to-shoulder, or one foot in advance and we immediately switch with the nearest guy (he breaks it down better lol).
But basically that opens the opportunity to cut passing lanes and steal the basket, or at least get some hands on it and disrupt the offensive flow.
This works by instead of staying in front of a guy (better POAs), we channel them to where we want to, so we can either disrupt him or get the easier switch we want. This probably gets to another level with Kessler as a great channeling option.

This to say that Thybulle current skill and ability seems to match that philosophy which is great to see

 

Thybulle has always been a defensive playmaker as opposed to a strict POA or Wing defender in my opinion. Thybulle's skill is his unorthodox defense that allows him to collect stocks in bunches - with ALOT of steals, blocks and deflections. It's part of why I said he plays really random angles or jumps passing lanes at odd times. He has an innate anticipation for this kind of stuff, that you can't really teach. In the same way that Smart just made stuff happen defensively, so does Thybulle, that to me is it's own valuable skill.

But no, you're probably not putting him on a fast guard and expecting him to stop someone - but to be honest, how many of those defenders are there really? The Thompson twins? Suggs? Cason Wallace? Caruso? Jrue isn't that guy anymore. Neither is Herb or Jaden McDaniels. Derrick White gets huge numbers put on him all the time. I really think you just need someone to do their best against players like SGA/Antman/Brunson/Cade etc then it's the team defense that doesn't let the rest of the supporting cast go off.

To be honest, I really like our defensive unit now. Luka is kinda underrated as a steals guy, he is really smart. Reaves is actually a good chaser. Kessler is an elite rim protector. Grimes is going to take the POA assignment with Ziaire backing him up in that role. Thybulle will be a chaos creator for us in the same way Smart was with Vando as a break in case of emergency. I'd like another large wing defender, like Kuminga or PJ to take that role, but we have Jake at the moment which is decent enough.

I'm excited.

Thybulle is a great signing for us. We needed defensive wings and were able to get one. Health is a question mark but if he’s good to go for the playoffs we are in great shape.
