Latest on Kuminga and Rui

Two other intriguing and separate situations currently up in the air due to LeBron's free agency revolve around Jonathan Kuminga and the Timberwolves.

Kuminga had his $24.3 million team option declined by the Atlanta Hawks, resulting in him entering unrestricted free agency.

Several teams have been rumored to have interest in the former seventh overall pick, including the Lakers and Cavaliers. It is possible several other suitors emerge, and with the Cavs waiting to hear about LeBron, they can't necessarily go and sacrifice funds on Kuminga that would be needed for James.

The Lakers aren't impacted by James whatsoever, and they can pursue Kuminga right now, but they will need to get creative with either trading Jarred Vanderbilt or possibly waiving and stretching his contract to open up a small amount of cap flexibility. A potential return to the Hawks is not out of the question either for Kuminga.

As for the Timberwolves, they are exploring ways to add frontcourt depth, specifically at the power forward position.

After trading Julius Randle to the Nets, as well as Naz Reid to Charlotte for LaMelo Ball, Minnesota is about $5 million over the first apron and just $8 million from their second apron hard cap. The only way for the Wolves to add another player of value who is not on a minimum contract is by trading either Josh Green, who they just got from the Hornets in the Ball trade, or Donte DiVincenzo.

The idea of rerouting Green would open the Wolves' $6 million taxpayer mid-level exception, which could in theory be used for an offer on a remaining free agent forward like Hachimura. Would he be willing to take this kind of a pay cut coming off his $18 million salary with the Lakers?

It is hard to imagine that the Timberwolves could actually get something for Green in a trade, especially since they can't attach any draft assets.

It’s almost as if having 2 dominant ball handlers in Luka and AR makes combo guards far more valuable on this roster. And then there’s the fact that this trade is clearly for the picks, but yes, let’s get stuck on the acquired player being a guard.

Really, I get him wanting to develop on his own, and if he stays.....so be it. I just feel like, we might as well try and trade him to somewhere, whether it's where Daddy goes or not. Maybe it's another piece to try and convince Bron to sign with them, or maybe they cut him and he goes and signs with his Dad anyways.

Rui or Kuminga WILL BE more helpful in the long run than keeping Bronny. So, "It's just business."

I would agree and if he and the family are serious, the tag along should stop here. This first was understandable and the kid has shown no entitlement, kept his head down and worked hard. But if he follows his dad to next location it's a poor narrative and career choice and he'll always be viewed that way.
