It was quite a sight to see the German shepherd in full flight. I kid… but, honestly, Maxi was just such a great bench piece for any team. Someone who could defend 3-5 credibly while spacing the floor and doing all the hustle junkyard dog kind of stuff.

 

I just realized that Utah can't offer a max for Austin anymore? Maybe Brooklyn and Chicago?

Hopefully Giannis is traded before FA begins on draft day? Is that possible. If that's the case, we can move into FA aggressively and improve the roster.

agree. i think we're giving reaves max or near-max regardless (the only wrinkle i could foresee is maybe starting max and declining over time?).

i don't think the diminished threat of signing elsewhere gives us any special leverage that we'd actually want to use. further, all it takes is one other team with the ability to offer the full max to put pressure on us.

anyway, it's still nice that not many teams have money. yes, there aren't many good players on the market, either, but that also means that teams looking to offload salaries will have to compete with sweeteners.

and i'm still liking the idea of getting denver to work a S&T with watson where they get maybe a pick swap with us and a trade exception. i'd be willing to do that to avoid the RFA staredown.

good point on the timing. our peak offer would have to be on draft night, but completed at the opening of FA (like with AD). so the giannis pursuit shouldn't actually interfere with our FA plans (unless something weird happens, of course). if we get giannis, we basically have no FA, lol. if we don't, we'll have some time to get ducks in a row.

 

I don’t think many people realize how bad this free agency class is for 2026. Really the only path to improve the team is to offer the cap space via trades.

 

If it’s not Giannis which I don’t think it will be then I would like to see them split their assets. Could you get Jarrett Allen for a first or 2 then also go get a defensive wing with the remaining assets?

 

I don't see Austin leaving.

Lakers have done right by him and he has developed good rapport with Luka.

It'd be a travesty if he did, though. I can't imagine what the Lakers would be like if AR wasn't what he is today. Just think about that. It's a Godsend Reaves is as good as he is as he genuinely makes this Lakers team much better than that should be.

Luka+LeBron alone wouldn't have gotten the Lakers to the title. With Reaves, you might be able to.

 

I think the Lakers liked what they saw in Bufkin and didn't want other teams signing him.

Probably think he'll be serviceable soon.
