He wasn't all that, he can shoot a little bit. Vando is a better perimeter defender, and is least equal in the post. Redick needs to coach what's on the roster, 5 out isn't the only way to play this game.

really wonder if we negotiated and couldn't come to a price for them taking vando. i would have probably given up a swap to do it, tbh. but they'd still have had to waive players or find a third team to eat our expirings. probably similar issues elsewhere.

It’s a no brainer to try to sign him for the TPMLE, bring back DFS, and see what we can do via trade with Vincent/Rui/Kleber expirings and Knect.

I was also fine with the idea of trying to sign Ayton to a $20mil/year extension if we traded for him but I don’t think that’s possible now that he’s bought out. It’s MLE or bust

DFS was more valuable to us than vando last year, and he was one of the only guys the coach trusted, so i agree it's a big loss. but it depends on a) the cost to keep him (and what opportunities that might cost going forward) and b) what we do with the flexibility.

once again, i'll reserve judgment until we know all that.

What do yall think is going to be Ayton’s price range in FA?

If we keep DFS and use the TPMLE on Ayton, that’s a massive success IMO. Sell Ayton on a starting position feasting on easy buckets from Luka, so he can restore his value and bet on himself in FA next year

But if DFS leaves and Ayton gets all the NTPMLE? I’m not saying I’m vehemently opposed to that, it COULD work out. But too risky of a gamble for my tastes considering his lack of motor.

    questions are:

will ayton take tpmle on a prove-it deal to make big cash next year? or will he only accept full MLE?

be curious to see his buyout number...

To hell with DFS, I'm giving Ayton all that 14M, with the promise of a fat extension in 26

Portland knows he is trash, with too many mid-range jumpers.

lol beat me to it on the first part.

if it's the second...yeah, i get that ayton's interest level is dlo-type offputting, but his talent level is also high. again, i'd have to know what's transpired between DFS and the FO to really understand it all. if DFS's agent was trying to squeeze us, i'm ok just moving on.

I think it's the NTPMLE. His numbers are too good for TPMLE.

I'm good with the swap DFS for Ayton IF we have a plan to use some trade asset to get wing help.

Getting him post buyout, nothing motivated a player like having to lose that buyout label and work your way up into real contracts again and not having to trade anything for him (which i didn't really like as an option) is an organizational win.

Sharpe is not a lob threat. Doesn't even dunk that much. About 1.15 dunks per 36 and an 18% dunk rate.

Just playing devils advocate here but if Ayton agrees to a long term deal at the NTPMLE but that means DFS doesn’t come back… would ya’ll do it?

A 26 year old Ayton for $15 mil/season for 3-4 years would be great value but it still would hurt if the cost is letting DFS walk

It depends on your strategy in the first place doesn't it? If you had a real interior presence, you don't need to rely on an undersized guy, being your 3/4:defender. Personally I believe that Vando's physicality, is more impactful with a legit big.

yeah, that was hj's question, too, and it's a fair one. my answer is yes, particularly if the choices were ayton at the mle or DFS at 4 years of the mle.

my guess is ayton wants a 1+1 PO deal at full mle, with the hope being he opts out for more cash next summer.

now, if i knew DFS was open to a shorter deal, it's a tougher question.
