Yeah, Rodman had some more advantages in his bag: - could wrestle in the post with a man who's workout routine was essentially the Rocky training in Russia montage in Rocky 4. Instead of dumbells, Malone is lifting tractors. But instead of chasing chickens in the alley, we know what Malone was chasing (per his comments to Vanessa). - was a tape junkie. If you impress MJ with your tape study, you know he's doing extra. - played a mental game that i don't think gets enough credit. Could rattle any cage. - had stamina and endurance that isn't there for Vando. Vando can only do Vando things for 18-20 minutes a game. Rodman did it for a 9 year run at for 35 mpg while hung over, still drunk, not sleeping, flying to Vegas, and still lapping teammates in running drills the next day. Build wise, maybe Pistons Rodman is a Vando comp but after that he packed on another 10-15 pounds. Maybe it was the wedding cake weight. So it wasn't just the springs holding him back. Speaking of Rodman, I'd like to see him vs Dray. In their defensive primes. That'd be a fun rivalry.
i take rodman on defense all day over draymond. not super close, imo. draymond is a bit underrated on offense because he's not a good shooter, but he's not a terrible shooter (career 33% on threes), and he's a very good passer and screen setter. and he has MUCH better hands than rodman or vando (who both had/have pretty meh-to-bad hands). but on defense...give me rodman over draymond. totally agree that aside from the strength, rodman could play 40 minutes at breakneck pace. vando can't. not sure i've seen someone since who can, tbh.
Dennis had a little more lift, plus he was a quick jumper, he could get lift off of 1 foot. Vando is a two foot ,set and leap type of guy. But no question, Dennis had super power level stamina, and a better slide too.
Again unplayable I'm the playoffs as he has is horrible offensive player. He a regular season minutes eater but you might as well pencil him out of a playoff rotation going forward
Vando is one of the few guys that gave all out effort, all series. We couldn't play half of the roster and he's the problem?
Basically one of the reasons Gobert was able to go off was Vando. Doesn't have to leave the paint and not big enough and strong enougj to keep him off the glass He gave effort no doubt but in the playoffs when everyone goes hard his offense is bad you start losing points per possession
Well the boy genius could have actually played the only big we really had, instead of trying to mind melt other guys into being a big. Gobert isn't exactly a scrub.
Sasha effort n yes gabe n ar also sucked but at least theyre somewhat of an offensive threat, this guy just runs around picking up fouls, he had 2 n1 fouls in gm 4
So..his role has never been to be a scorer. He wouldn't be in the NBA if that was the case. He's a perimeter disruptor but we had DFS and Reaves as our primary perimeter defenders. Neither are cut out to play that role. JJ values the 3pt shot over defense, that was obvious in this series. If he had AD..we win this series.
He'll be vet journeyman after his contract expires here, its not asking him to be a scoring threat but we're basically playing 4 vs 5 on O and his defense isnt elite to point that can offset being a bad O player...hes worse than Westbrick when it comes to leaving him open
Well if you play your best perimeter defender as a big...s*** is bound to go left. It's about roles...Conley didn't really do s*** all series, but he played his role, and his team won in 5. How much time did Vando spend guarding Ant or McDaniels all series? 5 mins? We chose to deploy him elsewhere. He's not the type of player to put on Randle,Gobert or Reid. He's tall but he doesn't have the lift or the heft, for guarding bigger guys.
Vando was grossly misused. HE IS NOT A LOW POST DEFENDER. He was a square peg that was forced to fit in a round hole all season long. Inexcusable that it took until game 5 for him to defend Ant.
i find it weird that we're the second team that tried to turn him into a backup center when he's clearly a wing defender. no he can't shoot, and that limits his utility, but just let him play to his strengths instead of trying to have him do things you want. he's meant to come in and disrupt the other team for 5 minute bursts. and he's good at that!
Exactly. It’s like having a relief pitcher and forcing him to be a starter, and getting mad when he gives up 6 runs after pitching 5 innings. Vando’s a specialist, and darn good at it too.
